Ocmulgee EMC Teaches Power Line Safety to Students at Bleckley County Primary School

Ocmulgee EMC believes that safety education starts early, and this week, that commitment came to life as cooperative representatives visited Bleckley County Primary School to teach students about the importance of staying safe around electricity and power lines.

The interactive presentation introduced young learners to the basics of how electricity works, why power lines must be treated with caution, and what to do if they ever encounter a dangerous situation. Using age‑appropriate demonstrations and real‑life examples, Ocmulgee EMC’s team helped students understand that electricity is both helpful and powerful—and that safety always comes first.

Students learned several key lessons, including:

• Never touch or go near a downed power line, even if it looks harmless
• Stay away from trees or objects that are close to power lines
• Tell an adult immediately if they see damaged equipment or fallen lines
• Keep kites, drones, and balloons far from overhead lines
• Call 911 if they witness an electrical emergency

The presentation also included visual demonstrations showing how electricity travels and why distance is the best protection. Students were encouraged to ask questions, and many shared their own experiences with storms, outages, and seeing utility crews at work.
